Knitting Entrelac in the Round with Judy Chan
9:00 AM – 4:30 PM, includes 1.5 hour lunch break
Maximum: 24 students
Experience: Advanced Beginner
What is Entrelac? Entrelac is a knitting technique that produces a fabric in a series of slanted blocks worked one at a time in tiers. Within a tier, blocks are worked in the same direction, either right to left or left to right. Each tier of blocks builds upon the one below it. Individual blocks are worked by picking up stitches along the selvage of a block from the tier below and working stitches of the growing block together with live stitches from the top edge of the next block below. The finished piece looks like basketweave. In this workshop, we will focus on knitting entrelac in the round while working on a hat. Techniques will include: picking up stitches as if to knit and as if to purl; knitting without turning work (aka knitting backwards); and how to “see” where you are in your pattern.
Judy Chan has been teaching knitting and other fiber arts in the Chicago area for the past 20 years. She learned to knit from her mother and advanced her knitting techniques from the best knitters and designers at workshops offered by TNNA, TKGA, Stitches, and WCKG. Judy’s original knitting patterns are currently sold at Mosaic Yarn Studio. Her finished garments can be seen and purchased at fashion shows such as Uncommon Threads (held by the Fine Line Creative Arts Center).
The workshop fee includes technique handouts and hat pattern.
You will need to bring two skeins of worsted weight wool – either 2 skeins of self striping yarn such as Noro or one skein each of at least 2 different colors; 16” circular knitting needles to obtain a stockinette stitch of 5.5 sts/inch; marker and basic knitting supplies.
